More than simply wearing multiple garments, layering is a design technique used to create contrast, alter proportions and add depth to a silhouette. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, designers explored layering in many different ways. From Martine Sitbon's sheer, lingerie-inspired tailoring to Helmut Lang's minimalist precision, Yohji Yamamoto's architectural volumes, John Galliano's romantic theatricality and Rick Owens' sculptural draping, each offered a unique interpretation of how garments could interact.
